Federal consultation on tamper-resistant prescription drug regulations announced

Federal budget commits $44.9 million to combat prescription drug abuse

On February 11, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty unveiled the 2014 Federal Budget. Of note to pharmacists was a commitment to provide $44.9 million over five years to "expand the focus of the National Anti-Drug Strategy from illicit drugs to also address prescription drug abuse in Canada." The Budget stated these funds would go toward educating Canadians on the safe use and disposal of prescription drugs, increase surveillance data on prescription drug use, enhance prevention and treatment services for First Nations, and to "increase inspections to minimize the diversion of prescription drugs from pharmacies for illegal sale." CPhA is currently attempting to secure a meeting with the Minister of Health to learn more about these measures.

CPhA president attends federal Minister of Health's symposium on prescription drug abuse

On January 24, CPhA president Sherry Peister attended a symposium on prescription drug abuse. The event was co-hosted by Federal Minister of Health, Rona Ambrose, and the Canadian Centre on substance abuse and was attended by over 40 people. Sherry was seated at the head table and had the opportunity to interact with the Minister and bring the pharmacist's point of view to discussions throughout the day. Read more about the symposium
