Digital Health Survey: Community Pharmacists Recognize the Opportunity to Enhance Patient Care

New research from Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) and the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) reveals that community pharmacists are frequently using digital health solutions and  they want increased access to  continue enhancing patient safety and quality of care.

The National Survey of Canadian Community Pharmacists: Use of Digital Health Technologies in Practice*, explored Canadian community pharmacists’ access to, and usage of, digital health tools. The research found that digital health solutions, such as provincial drug information systems (DIS), access to lab results and electronic medical record (EMR)-generated prescriptions are improving productivity and quality of care.

Better Health Together shows how digital health helps Canadians

Every day, more of Canada's health care system goes digital. It's a private, secure and effective way to make health care better, for all of us. We proudly support Canada Heath Infoway and its new public education campaign, Better Health Together. Hear the stories of patients and providers who are benefiting from digital health by visiting www.BetterHealthTogether.ca and read more about the initiative in the press release.

Canada's push for electronic health records (EHR) began in 2001 when Canada Health Infoway was created to develop a national system. EHR refers to a patient's complete, comprehensive file, while electronic medical records (EMR) are used in physicians' offices and are one part of EHR.

CPhA has been involved every step of the way.

We co-chaired the eRx working group on electronic prescribing with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and in May 2013 we released an e-Prescribing Joint Statement  (en français) stating by 2015, e-prescribing will be the means by which prescriptions are generated for Canadians.
